SXM’s salt story begins over 1,200 years ago, when the Arawak-descended Amerindians arrived and named the island “Soualiga” — the Land of Salt. Natural salt ponds covered the island, and this resource shaped the economy and culture for generations.
By the 17th century, European powers recognized the island’s value. In 1631, a Dutch ship entered Great Bay and — despite running aground and being shipwrecked — discovered an abundant, shimmering layer of salt. This marked the beginning of SXM’s transformation into the Caribbean’s leading and wealthiest salt source. Today, we honor that legacy by continuing the island’s salt-harvesting tradition with respect, care, and craftsmanship.
